LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Nevada politicians from both sides have reacted to Tuesday’s debate between former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris.
Senator Catherine Cortez Masto took to X after the debate saying, “After tonight, Nevadans are more fired up than ever to make @KamalaHarris our next president! She made the stakes perfectly clear, and we know we can trust her to stand up for middle class families, for women, and for Americans all across this country to build a better future.” Masto posted several times during the debate criticizing Trump saying, “Trump is the reason states can strip women of their fundamental freedoms. His judges overturned Roe v. Wade, and he’s proud of it.”
Republican Sam Brown who is running against incumbent Jacky Rosen posted to X during the debate saying, “Under Biden-Harris, America is less safe because of failed leadership. Jacky Rosen has gone right along with it – refusing to hold Joe Biden and Kamala Harris responsible for their retreat from responsibility. We need LEADERS, not timid followers.” He also stated during the debate, “Biden, Harris and Rosen have cost Nevada families nearly $33k more in basic living costs because of inflated prices caused by their reckless policies. We literally can’t afford to have them reelected. They’ve drained the savings of many Nevada families and they just don’t care.”
Nevada State Democratic Chair Daniele Monroe-Moreno released a statement following the debate saying:
“We now see why Donald Trump didn’t want to debate Vice President Kamala Harris. Nevadans again saw the unhinged, defeated former president on full display tonight, peddling his extreme agenda of ripping away women’s fundamental freedoms, gutting worker protections, and giving tax cuts to corporate landlords and his ultra-wealthy friends while he raises costs for hardworking Nevada families.
“In stark contrast, Vice President Harris laid out her forward-facing agenda to deliver on the kitchen table issues that matter most to our communities and builds on a record of creating more than 280,000 good-paying Nevada jobs and lowering health care and prescription drug costs, investing over $1 billion for affordable housing in Nevada, and fighting to defend our freedoms and democracy.
“The choice this November is clear. A second Trump term would mean four more years of failed promises, of anti-worker schemes, and billionaire-first scams. Nevadans know that Vice President Harris is for the people, while Donald Trump is for himself – and voters will reject Donald Trump for a third time.”
Nevada Attorney General Aaron Ford kept it simple after the debate posting to X, “Kamala won. Trump lost,” and describing Trump’s performance as “hot garbage.”
Nevada Republican Party Chairman Michael McDonald spoke to 8 News Now during a debate watch party Tuesday saying:
“I think you look at both candidates, you have one that has accomplished a lot. You have one that’s come up excuses on the economy. The best line of the night was, ‘If you’ve been sitting in the White House for three and a half years, all these things you say you’re going to do, why haven’t you done them?’ The whole thing about the border. Executive Order could happen just like that. Close the border. Donald Trump closed the border. They opened the border. Those are simple things. We start talking about issues that are related to the kitchen table, which I always talk about, she has nowhere to go on this.”
“I wish he would have talked no tax on tips, no tax on Social Security, because that’s what I grew up on. You know, we were born and raised in Las Vegas. That’s an industry that we put food in our mouth, clothing our backs, put us through school. That’s a big issue. So that affects so many people here. Donald Trump was out the gate with that. I remember when we did it, they said it the Democratic Party, along with some of the union leaders. It’s stupid. It’s the dumb idea, and now they’re all endorsing it and trying to copy it. It shows right there that this is an issue that is dealing with the people, the working men and women of this state.”
“It’s a very tight state, what we talked about before. I think when you look at it, I think so. I think when you look at it, the issue that, why haven’t you done it? That played a lot in that room right there. If you could have, you would have, why haven’t you done it? That was the biggest use, I think, the biggest line of the night, the going back and forth on issues we expected it. You know, she’s changed her policies on what she believes in fracking and other issues. They hit Donald Trump. It was almost like Donald Trump was fighting three people, not one. So it goes with it, that happens before, but those issues right there, when you cannot come back and you cannot answer those, that’s where he got her.”“It’s a very tight state, what we talked about before. Republican John Lee who is running for Congress spoke to 8 News Now during the watch party stating:
“I think Donald Trump did great. I thought she did horrible, defending everything that’s gone wrong in this country, expecting us to believe unicorns and rainbows are going to happen when she shows up. This is a dangerous world right now. We need a strong leader in this country. We need people at the state, local levels who can trust that leadership and we can build this country again. One man can’t do it. One Congressman can’t do it, but we as local elected officials can go back to Washington and do the things and take it back to our states and build this country back up again, build our military back up, and work the issues and the problems out that we’ve had during the Biden Harris campaign, and enjoy the freedoms of America and the safety and security we had before.”
“I thought the questions were relevant to the nation today. I thought they were relevant to the world. And I thought this was on the big screen and the big platform they run.”
“I think most teams solidified where they think they are. There’s probably 27% of the people that say they have no idea who either of these people really were, till tonight, where they got to see them. I thought it was great that Donald did not attack her viciously. And I also thought she embarrassed herself with all the facial you know. I mean, this is a serious world, smiling and laughing and looking around that doesn’t get it. That’s what high school girls do. This was a serious night. She didn’t act serious about it. She should have been more defined and let me know as a person what I could expect out of her as a leader, maybe.”
Erica Neely who is running for Assembly District 9 spoke to 8 News Now saying:
“It was energetic. Yes, it was exciting, because it’s a moment in time that’s important for our country.”
“Foreign policies is very important. And they spoke about foreign policies, which I was very happy to hear about”
“Kamala Harris was trying to get away from Biden, but she is Biden because she ran as Biden Kamala ticket. And so I think that’s going to sway a lot of people. She’s not taking responsibility, and as Americans, we need to take responsibility of our own actions, especially when you’re in a leadership role.”
Congresswoman Susie Lee took to X Tuesday during the debate saying, “Donald Trump, the man responsible for overturning Roe v. Wade, does not believe women should have the right to make decisions about their own bodies. Nevadans know just how wrong he and far-right extremists are.”
